Question 1: The Why Behind MisMacK Clean Cosmetics
Your brand has made waves in the beauty industry, but every great venture starts with a vision. Can you share what inspired you to start MisMacK Clean Cosmetics? What was your "why," and how has it evolved over time?
The vision for MisMacK Clean Cosmetics started from my passion for makeup artistry and a deep desire to create products that empower people to embrace their authenticity. As a professional makeup artist, I wanted to create high-performance, multi-use cosmetics that were safe, sustainable, cruelty-free, vegan, and Made in Canada—something I wasn’t finding in the market.
My "why" has always been rooted in empowering individuals to express themselves creatively while staying true to their values. Over time, this has evolved into a larger mission: redefining beauty as a tool of empowerment and education. It’s about more than just makeup—it’s about giving people the confidence to feel good inside and out.
Question 2: Overcoming Barriers
As a woman leader in business, you’ve likely faced unique challenges. What barriers have you encountered on your journey, and how did you overcome them to reach where you are today?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is the constant pressure of balancing financial risk with growth, especially as a small business owner. Early on, I had to overcome the fear of failure and learn to trust my instincts, even when faced with naysayers. I’ve also encountered the challenge of being taken seriously as a female entrepreneur in a traditionally male-dominated business world.
To overcome these barriers, I leaned into resilience, sought mentorship, and learned to adapt. Joining programs like Shuswap Launch-a-Preneur gave me the tools to refine my business model and understand the financial side of entrepreneurship. Ultimately, surrounding myself with a strong, supportive team and staying true to my vision helped me push through and thrive.
Question 3: Raising $150,000 for Kids’ Sports in Canada
Your initiative to raise $150,000 for kids’ sports in Canada is incredible. What inspired you to launch this campaign, and why is supporting youth sports so close to your heart?
This campaign is personal to me because I’ve seen firsthand how sports can shape a child’s life. As a mom, I’ve watched my son Evan grow through the values of teamwork, resilience, and perseverance that sports teach. However, I also know that not every family can afford to provide those opportunities.
When I had the chance to partner with KidSport Canada, it felt like the perfect way to give back. Through our Grit Kits campaign, we’re not just raising funds but fostering a sense of community and ensuring that all kids, regardless of their financial circumstances, can access the benefits of sports. It’s about creating opportunities and giving back in a way that aligns with our core values at MisMacK.
Question 4: The Dragon’s Den Experience
Your feature on Dragon’s Den brought your story to a national stage. What was that experience like for you as a leader and entrepreneur? How has it impacted you personally and professionally?
Dragon’s Den was one of the most exhilarating and transformative experiences of my career. Stepping into the Den with my 13-year-old son by my side was a moment I’ll never forget. Sharing our story on such a prominent platform validated all the hard work we’ve put into building MisMacK.
While we didn’t get a deal, the experience opened so many doors, from national recognition to new opportunities for growth. Personally, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and reaffirmed my belief in the power of authenticity. Professionally, it gave us the visibility and momentum to launch our biggest initiative yet with KidSport Canada. It was a turning point that I’ll always treasure.
5: Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
As a successful entrepreneur and community leader, what advice would you give to women and young leaders aspiring to break barriers and make a meaningful impact in their industries or communities?
First and foremost, trust yourself and your vision. It’s easy to doubt your abilities or compare your journey to others, but your authenticity is your superpower. Surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you and never stop learning.
Don’t be afraid of failure—it’s a stepping stone to success. Every setback I’ve faced has taught me valuable lessons that I carry forward. Finally, lead with purpose. When your work aligns with your values and passion, the impact you make will be both meaningful and enduring.
