Transforming Workplace Opportunity Employer Program Committee Member

Jay Brewster (he/him) brings over 25 years of experience in learning and development, including 7 years dedicated to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Residing in Calgary on the traditional lands of Treaty 7 peoples and the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6), he identifies as a cisgender queer man with an invisible disability. Jay’s passion is bridging gaps between people, ideas, and opportunities, particularly for those often underestimated or marginalized.
He aims to use his skills and creativity to build a vibrant, inclusive business community. As an elected Director for the Alberta 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce, he champions equity and supports gender and sexually diverse individuals in commerce and the workplace. Jay also serves on the Board of Directors for the Get Real Movement, supporting their efforts to combat 2SLGBTQI+ discrimination, racism, and bullying. Having faced personal challenges with self-acceptance because of his queer identity and invisible disability, he values creating safe spaces for folks to embrace their authentic selves.
Outside of volunteering, Jay loves spending time with his husband, Ken, and their dog, Stella, indulging in the arts, travelling, and enjoying coffee. Jay believes in the power of community and often says, “Inclusion is not a policy; it’s a practice that starts with each of us.”

I joined the Transforming the Workplace Opportunity (TWO) Advisory Committee because I am deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all individuals, including women, across their intersecting identities. With over 25 years of experience in learning and development and a strong focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), I have seen firsthand the transformative power of inclusive practices. Being part of this committee allows me to leverage my knowledge and passion to help shape policies and initiatives that address gender equality and equity in the workplace. This opportunity aligns perfectly with my dedication to bridging gaps between people, ideas, and opportunities, especially for those often underestimated or marginalized.
Being part of the TWO Advisory Committee means contributing to a meaningful and impactful initiative to create a more inclusive business community. It provides a platform to advocate for best practices and support the development of the program ‘The Pathway to Placement,’ which will enhance leadership opportunities for women and address the power gap. I especially like that this initiative is not just about policy change; it’s about creating a culture where all women, regardless of race, ethnicity, or other intersecting identities, feel valued, respected, and supported. By participating in this committee, I hope to continue to champion equity, support gender and sexually diverse individuals, and inspire others to engage deeply with DEIB efforts, ultimately fostering a workplace where everyone can thrive.
